Biography
Born in 1909 to a large landowning family in Kanagi, Aomori Prefecture; his real name was Tsushima Shūji. He dropped out of the French literature department of Tokyo Imperial University. Under the guidance of Ibuse Masuji, he drew notice with his first story collection, "The Final Years." After the war he published "The Setting Sun," "Villon's Wife," "No Longer Human," and other works, and won enormous popularity as a writer of the Buraiha ("decadent") school. In 1948, shortly after finishing "No Longer Human," he drowned himself in the Tamagawa Canal at the age of 38. The works he kept writing almost to the moment of his death continue to find passionate readers, especially among the young, to this day.
